Mobile Device Management: the platform that enrols and governs every phone, tablet and laptop touching your business data — before it becomes a liability.
MDM enrols and controls the phones, tablets and laptops accessing business data — enforcing encryption, PINs and updates, separating work data from personal, and enabling remote wipe of lost or departed-employee devices.
Microsoft Intune is the standard MDM platform in Microsoft 365 environments.
Every unmanaged device is an open door
MDM closes that door by putting your IT team in control of every device that touches business data, whether it's company-owned or a staff member's personal phone.
When a staff member accesses email on their personal phone, your business data lives on a device you don't control. If that phone is lost, stolen, or the employee leaves, there's no reliable way to recover or erase it — unless MDM is in place.
MDM is a mandatory control under the Australian Cyber Security Centre's Essential Eight and is required by most cyber insurance policies for businesses with mobile or remote workforces.
For small and medium businesses, MDM has historically felt like an enterprise-only tool. Microsoft Intune, included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium, has changed that. Most Australian SMBs already have a licence that includes full MDM capabilities — they just haven't switched it on.
Good MDM doesn't just lock devices down. It separates business applications and data from personal use so staff never feel like the company is reading their private messages — and enrolment becomes painless when that trust is built in from the start.
What MDM actually controls
A properly configured MDM platform covers every stage of a device's life in your business — from first enrolment through to departure.
Device Enrolment
Devices are enrolled into your MDM platform — automatically for corporate devices via zero-touch provisioning, or via a self-service portal for personal devices (BYOD). Enrolment registers the device and applies your baseline configuration instantly.
Encryption & PIN Enforcement
MDM enforces device encryption and minimum PIN/passcode requirements regardless of device type or operating system. No enrolled device can store business data without these controls active — the policy is non-negotiable.
Work / Personal Separation
On personal (BYOD) devices, MDM creates an isolated work profile. Business apps and data live in that container — the IT team can manage and wipe the work profile without touching personal photos, messages or apps.
App & Update Management
Software updates and required business applications are pushed silently to enrolled devices. No more chasing staff to install patches — MDM enforces compliance and can block network access for devices running outdated software.
Conditional Access Integration
MDM pairs with Conditional Access policies to block non-compliant devices from accessing Microsoft 365, email or other cloud services. A device that fails a compliance check is quarantined until it meets policy — automatically.
Remote Wipe
If a device is lost, stolen, or an employee departs, business data is remotely erased within minutes. On corporate devices the full device is wiped. On personal devices, only the work profile is removed — personal content is untouched.
What MDM works with
Microsoft Intune
The standard MDM platform for Microsoft 365 environments. Included in Business Premium licences, Intune manages Windows, iOS, Android and macOS devices from a single portal. Most Australian SMBs already own a licence that includes it.
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)
MDM makes BYOD programmes viable by separating work and personal data. Staff use their own device without surrendering privacy — the business controls its apps and data container, not the whole phone. Enrolment rates go up when staff trust the separation.
Conditional Access
Conditional Access policies check device compliance before granting access to cloud services. An enrolled, encrypted device with current patches passes. An unknown or non-compliant device is blocked — regardless of the user's valid credentials.
MDM — Frequently Asked Questions
What is mobile device management?
A platform for enrolling and managing devices that access business data — enforcing security settings, pushing updates and remotely wiping business data when needed. It gives IT teams visibility and control across every phone, tablet and laptop in the business.
Can MDM see personal photos and messages on staff phones?
No. Modern MDM separates work and personal profiles — the business controls its apps and data container, not personal content. This separation is fundamental to how the technology works, and transparent policy builds the trust that makes enrolment painless for staff.
What happens when a managed device is lost or someone leaves?
Business data is remotely wiped — selectively on personal devices (work profile only), fully on corporate ones — and access tokens are revoked within minutes. The device is unenrolled from the platform and the account is disabled in your directory.
Do we already have MDM with Microsoft 365?
If you have Microsoft 365 Business Premium or any Microsoft 365 licence with Intune included, yes — you likely already have a full MDM platform licenced and waiting to be configured. Many Australian businesses are paying for MDM they haven't turned on yet.
Is MDM required for cyber insurance?
Most Australian cyber insurers now require evidence of MDM or endpoint management controls as part of underwriting. Without it, businesses with mobile or remote workforces may face higher premiums or limited coverage for device-related incidents.
How long does MDM enrolment take?
For corporate devices using zero-touch provisioning, enrolment is automatic out of the box — staff power on a new device and it configures itself. For BYOD devices using a self-service portal, enrolment typically takes under 10 minutes per device.
