Australian Businesses Are Racing Into AI — Without the Guardrails

New research from SAP and Oxford Economics paints a telling picture: AI now supports 29% of tasks in the average Australian business, up from 25% last year. Leaders expect that number to hit 48% within two years. Investment is climbing too — Australian companies plan to spend around $35.5 million on AI this year, up nearly 30% on last year.

The problem? The guardrails aren’t keeping up. Only 22% of Australian businesses say they’re governance-ready for AI, compared to 33% globally. Nearly half (49%) report that AI agents have already taken incorrect actions during pilots. And 54% of leaders admit employees are accepting AI outputs without enough scrutiny — trusting the machine without checking its work.

For smaller businesses, the takeaway isn’t to slow down — it’s to be deliberate. Enterprise can absorb the cost of fixing a governance gap after the fact. An SMB that rolls out an AI tool with bad data or no oversight might not catch the mistake until a client’s been affected. The report found 73% of Australian businesses still struggle with data quality, which means the AI tools they’re deploying are only as good as the messy spreadsheets and disconnected systems feeding them.

The gap between AI confidence and AI readiness is real, and it’s wider at the SMB end where there’s no dedicated AI team to catch the problems early.

The practical checklist is short: know what data your AI tools are accessing, have someone in the team responsible for reviewing AI outputs before they reach customers, and don’t skip the basics — clean data, clear policies, and a human in the loop.
