Microsoft Copilot
If your business runs Microsoft 365 — and most Australian SMBs do — then Microsoft Copilot is the AI tool you’re most likely to encounter first. Copilot sits inside the Microsoft apps your team already uses: Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and PowerPoint.
In practical terms, it can draft emails from dot points, summarise Teams meetings, build first-pass reports from data in Excel, and create presentation decks from Word documents. It’s not perfect, and it works best when your data is well-organised, but for routine tasks it saves genuine time.
AI-powered security tools
This is arguably where AI delivers the most immediate value for SMBs. Modern endpoint detection and response (EDR) platforms, email security gateways, and threat intelligence tools all use machine learning to detect patterns and anomalies that rule-based systems miss.
When your EDR platform flags unusual behaviour on a workstation at 11pm — say, a process attempting to encrypt files in bulk — that’s AI at work. When your email security catches a phishing email that’s grammatically perfect and visually identical to a real vendor invoice, that’s AI pattern matching doing something a spam filter from five years ago simply couldn’t.
